These birds have always intrigued me at zoos. It was wonderful to see them in the wild! This strapping fellow was a great sighting set against an open pan with white wild flowers in the grasses. Taken in Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana.
They're big birds, but smaller than an emu. The males can get up to 4ft tall but the females are half that. According to many sources, the males are the heaviest birds that can fly.
