Devious Grin by DeniseSoden Devious Grin by DeniseSoden
This is Munda, a prehensile-tailed skink. PTS's are from the Solomon Islands. Unlike most other species of skinks, PTS's have very powerful legs, long toes, and extremely sharp claws in order to climb in their rain forests homes. Many owners will clip their nails in order to make handling easier. The zoo never trims her nails, leaving them for her to climb like she would in the wild; we just use gloves and careful handling ;)

They are mostly nocturnal animals, preferring to hide or bask during the day and becoming more active at night. Like snakes, they collect scent particles with their tongues. The Jacobson's organ on the roof of their mouth then analyzes this information. Despite their large size and powerful jaws, they are strictly herbivores, feeding on plants and fruit.
