Thanks for the compliment, though I do have to say it makes me sad when people anthropomorphize animals... he's not sad, that's just what meerkat faces look like.
Well my apologies then--was just stating a relation to humanistic features that are dramatized through the photograph. One can admit that the eyes are looking searchingly towards the sky, no? Meh, maybe imagination is just taking over. Apologies for the offense, although do realize that it's human nature to humanize animals so as to better relate to them on a front where linguistic barriers are encountered.
Oh, whoops- did not mean to imply anything of the sort! I think that bad zoos are sad places, but good ones are definitely happy places for animals. They are thus safe from the mean, evil, cruel people of the world.
And yes, he was looking toward the sky, as meerkats do to search for predators via air
