Call of the Crow

Jeckle is an American Crow. They are solid black, aside from feathers around the face that often turn white or gray like human hair with age. His distinct "caaahh-caaahh-caaahh" is a territorial mark in which the bird will make his head thrusts up and down. This call is almost always done in threes.

Crows are omnivorous. In the wild they eat invertebrates, carrion, human scrap food, eggs, stranded fish, etc. At the zoo, Jeckle's favorite treat is mealworms Mmm mmm.

Jeckle was taken out of his nest as a fledgling by a member of the community, unfortunately. Imprinted, he could not be re-released. Crows are social animals who travel and live in groups (a murder). An outsider (as Jeckle would be if he tried to enter) would be outcasted or even killed. On his own, chances of survival for a single crow are slim.

As an imprinted bird, Jeckle prefers human companionship and picks his handlers (he has his favorites, for sure). He loves going out to presentations (and eagerly hops in his travel carrier) and helps the public learn more about him and his kind as an animal ambassador.
